Have you ever considered what life would be like without song lyrics?
Typical answers would go something like “no way”, or perhaps “I can’t live without song lyrics!”
That is all too normal, and all too understandable.
Because you see, these songs and song lyrics, they mean something to you. They penetrate the depths of your consciousness and plant themselves in places beyond your awareness can detect. You identify with these lyrics – you understand completely what they mean and entail. Before you know it, these lyrics are memorized and stuck in your mind for as long as you can remember. You have just been the subject of a similar process to inception.
Which is why marketers like me have a job, and why the marketing industry is worth gazillions of dollars a year; because it works.
Don’t believe it? Nielsen research shows that you will be able to consciously recall a brand, as long as you’ve seen it at a frequency of 5 times or more (yes, that includes when you’re not focusing). Try as you may, your frequency with the golden arches probably sit close to an eternity’s worth of recall, so good luck forgetting McDonald’s in this lifetime.
If this visual recall works, what more is a song you put on repeat?
“I’m all out of love / I’m so lost without you”
“Because of you / I learned to play on the safe side so I don’t get hurt”
“Will you still love me / When I’ve got nothing but my aching soul”
“Everytime I try to fly / I fall without my wings / I feel so small”
“Never mind I’ll find / Someone like you”
The list goes on… but truly, note the patterns here. These song lyrics might have stemmed from true emotions and feelings (which is probably why they resonate so well with the world), but they are all written from a stand of powerlessness. Imagine songs like this – multiple songs like this back to back – being drilled into your subconscious, day in and day out. Some negativity is bound to enter your system, without you knowing it.
Be conscious of what you listen to, and know too that it’s one of the ways that ‘powerlessness’ can be primed in your mind, just as we all know it is not actually advisable to listen to emo songs on repeat after a painful breakup. Take note too of subliminal messaging on themes like anger and lust. Definitely not healthy!
