The sun never shone brighter, as he looked upon the horizon. The sky an image belonging to dreams of lives long forgotten as the sea of concrete stood, layer upon layer, thinning out into eternity as it melded into the burning sky.

The world seemed so small from here, he thought, as he surveyed the dreamlike scene. He ponders on the path that brought him here – a motley combination of peaks, valleys, thorns and ashes, with smoke in his eyes and blood on his sleeves.

And yet there he stood. Through it all, perhaps having suffered beyond his capacity and carried more than should have been his burden, there he stood; invincible, atop the highest point in the city, with the breeze in his face and fire in his eyes.

The magic lasted only a few moments more, as his thoughts turned inward. This was my goal. I’ve worked so hard for this, and I’ve finally achieved this. But is this the end? Am I just supposed to stay here and be happy, because I definitely can spend more than an eternity here with this magical view.

And then it struck him, as he stared out into the dying embers of the burning sky. He picked up his backpack, slung it over his shoulders, and started down the peak. The path down was full of potholes, thorns, poisonous snakes, and he hadn’t had a drink for a day – but he smiled more brilliantly than ever before, as he trudged on. The journey was his dream, and the destination but a fleeting milestone.

The sun never shone brighter, as the journey welcomed the adventurer.
